Grammy award-winning and chart-topping rapper Lecrae got even more public with his faith yesterday when he was baptized in the Jordan River.
“Today we got baptized in the Jordan River. The one John baptized Jesus in,” he wrote on Instagram. “I love the Jordan because of all the symbolism it holds. It was the border of the promised land. It was the picture of safety and security. Getting baptized in it was an incredible experience for me.”
The hip hop artist is currently visiting the middle east, traveling to important places from the Bible. He shared some of his pictures as he stopped at locations like the Jericho road and the place where Jesus fed the thousands.
“Sitting in the spot where Christ fed thousands of people physical food while also telling them that those who hunger for righteousness are blessed and will be satisfied,” he shared.
For the Christian rapper, visiting these different sights illuninated the Bible in a new way.
“Olive oil, millstones, synagogues, walking in places God walked. It hits different when you see it with your own eyes,” he reflected.
Lecrae, who was recently added to the list of performers for the Dove Awards, also used his post to share the history of baptism with his followers.
“Here’s an interesting fact. Baptism didn’t start with John the Baptist. The Jewish ritual immersion in water is called a mikvah, which is a Hebrew word meaning gathering of waters,” he wrote. “Immersion in a mikvah also represents death and resurrection. When you come back out of the water, you come back to life as a new creation. When I was immersed into Christ ✝️(not just water) I also become a new creation.”
The rapper ended with a quote from the Bible that summarized the significance of his experience at the Jordan.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Messiah, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” The more you learn the Jewish roots the more truth comes alive.”
