There’s a reason Brian “Head” Welch hasn’t changed his rock star image much since giving his life to Christ.
In a recent interview with The Christian Post, the guitarist and co-founder of the group Korn explained why he may not look too different from the days before he found God.
“We just got to step back out of the religious things and just think about who Jesus hung out with — the fisherman, the prostitute, all kinds of people and I fit right in that little group. That’s who He goes after and saves, He loves everybody,” Welch said. “We’re a story but the thing is, He cleans us on the inside.”
While some Christians dress similar to others in their community, the rock star doesn’t believe that’s what we’re called to do.
“Nowhere in the Bible does it say you gotta start looking like everybody else,” he shared.
Still, he isn’t knocking people who feel called to wear suits or dress a certain way in church.
“Suits are awesome. I’m not getting down [on that] but I want to be me now,” Welch said. “Jesus always led me and said, ‘You be yourself’ and you don’t have to change into anything except for how He leads me to change, not how man does.”
He spoke about the beauty of the individual image that God gave each person.
“The beautiful mystery of Christ in you, that’s our identity,” he said. “So I can look like this and all these nice guys in suits, it’s Christ in you, the hope of glory, and that’s what we all have in common.”
Instead of putting up a front, Welch said it is important to continue to be real with this generation.
“You gotta be real in this generation,” he said. “This generation can smell a phony a mile away and so we got to be real and raw.”
