God can often be a strict God. Our expectations as Christians are defined within the Bible, and when we disobey God, we have sinned.

We’ve all been there. We have been guilty of committing some sin, whatever it may be, and we know how terrible that feeling is. Outside judgement isn’t needed because we face our own shame.

So what happens when you are not the one to sin but you see someone eles doing so?

This month we’re addressing this question by focusing on the word “respect,” which is defined as the due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others.

Respect is a word often spoken but not practiced as frequenlty as it should. In 2019 it is easy to say how far our society has come, especially in the Christian world. But does that truly mean we respect one another?

In John 8:7, Jesus states, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” Who is without sin in this world? No one. It’s important to never forget this, especially if we attemp to pass judgment, which is not our place to do.

Whatever your differences are, always remember to respect one another. You do not have to agree with someone or their choices to still show respect. Everyone walks a different path in life and Christians come in many forms.

Now, I’m sure you’re wondering, how is this health related? Well, the ways in which we think and behave is related to our mental health. The power of thought is understated and without realizing it, your behaviors and outlook can shift drastically.

Without a healthy perspective of life, the body can suffer physiological (body) effects. For example, prolonged stress can cause a hormone called cortisol to remain at high levels in the body, which studies have shown can kill brain cells! Respecting others will allow you to have a clear conscious and will ultimately decrease stress for yourself and others. The body is all connected and you must live well to be well.

With hatred increasing in the world more and more each day, we have to return to this basic principle. Value one another. Love one another. Respect one another.

Michelle’s Monthly Minute- This month, take a minute to reflect on a time where someone differed from one of your values. How did you respond, both internally in your thoughts and outwardly to the person? Did you exhibit respect even still? Think of ways you could have handled this situation better so that you can handle future situations with respect first.
