On Sunday Kanye West took his ‘Sunday Services’ to Dayton, Ohio to offer healing after a gunman opened fire in the city killing nine people and leaving many others injured earlier this month.

Kanye was one of many celebrities in the Dayton this past weekend to show their support for the victims. Comedian Dave Chappelle hosted a separate event later that night, the “Gem City Shine” block party, which included performers such as Chance The Rapper, music legend Stevie Wonder, Teyana Taylor, and Thundercat. Before his block party, Chappelle stopped by Kanye’s ‘Sunday Service’ and spoke words of encouragement to the crowd.

“The best way that we can honor our fallen is by getting up better than we were before,” said Chappelle, who is an Ohio native. “We won’t let those people die in vain. They are heroes. They are martyrs. This is our city.”

Kanye’s wife, Kim Kardashian West, tweeted a video of the service with the caption “In support of the victims and survivors of the Dayton mass shooting.” It has been reported that she attended the ‘Sunday Service’ along with the couple’s two oldest children, North and Saint.

Other videos tweeted out by audience members show Kanye giving a rousing rendition of his 2004 crossover hit “Jesus Walks” and his choir singing “Hallelujah.”

This is not the first time Kanye has taken his weekly service beyond the grassy outside stage in Caliorfina where he typically hosts it.  Last week he joined his service with the California Worship Center, a church founded by music producer and Gospel artist Warren and Erica Campbell, for a three-hour event. His choir performed music from Gospel powerhouses, Fred Hammond, “This Is The Day,” and Tye Tribbett, “Lift Him Up,” according to the Daily Mail.

While Kanye’s ‘Sunday Service’ is not a church service per se (there is no preaching), it definitely has a “Christian vibe,” says his wife. “It’s just a very spiritual Christian experience. It’s honestly more like a healing experience for my husband. It’s definitely something he believes in — Jesus . . ., “she told Elle Magazine.

Music producer and Gospel legend Kirk Franklin also acknowledged the services as a healing process for Kanye. In an interview with Beats 1 Radio host Ebro Darden, he defended Kanye’s ‘Sunday Services.’

“Let that be his medicine. Let people heal.”
